Maureen's Musings -- March, 2017

They’re everywhere – poles of wood or limestone, copper or stainless steel, even plastic. They all bear the words, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” a number languages. Around the world, there are more than 100,000 Peace Poles, all bearing witness to humanity’s longing for peace. Did you know there’s a Peace Pole at the North Magnetic Pole, at the Egyptian pyramids in Giza, in Ghana, throughout Europe and North America, and of course many in Japan, where the tradition began? Now, thanks to Al Tweedy’s initiative and support from the UUFG Foundation and the UU Humanist Circle, we will have our own Peace Pole outside the main building at UUFG. Our Pole says “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in English, French, Arabic, Hebrew, Spanish, German, Swedish, Braille, and Timucua (language of the early residents of this area). Immediately following the service on Sunday, March 26, we’ll gather for a brief ceremony to dedicate this important symbol of our UU values. Afterwards, let’s gather in Phillips Hall for refreshments and conversation. (Please consider bringing a little extra finger food, as UUs of all ages will join for this all-ages event.)

Please thank Al Tweedy when you see him – without his creativity and willingness both to have an idea and to see it through, the UUFG Peace Pole would be nothing more than a lovely idea. Which leads me to wonder: what lovely ideas do YOU have that are just waiting to come to birth? Let’s talk!
