HIGHLIGHTS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE PROGRAMMING FOR SUMMER 2018

Sunday, June 17
Share the Plate with GRACE Marketplace during the Sunday service on June 17. GRACE Marketplace is supported by the City of Gainesville and Alachua County, offering a wide variety of supportive services for the homeless. At our June 17 service we will give all non-designated offerings to GRACE Marketplace.

Friday—Saturday, June 29-10
FL-ICAN! Fourth Assembly: “Collaborating for a Healthy Environment and Climate Resiliency,” Friday, June 29, 10 am - 8 pm and Saturday, June 30, 10 am - 4 pm This fourth annual meeting of the Interfaith Climate Actions Network will take place in Orlando at the Dr. J.B. Callahan Neighborhood Center, 101 North Parramore Avenue. Co-sponsored by our statewide social justice organization, UU Justice Florida (of which UUFG is a member). Sunday, July 15
UUFG Sunday service on Corruption of Our Democracy, Sunday, July 15. This service with speaker Dr. David Price will kick off our newest focus for social justice, as congregation members requested in our vote in January. For background on this national UU Congregational Study/Action Issue, please go to UUA.org and type into the search box, “Corruption of our Democracy.” After the service, we will have a table where you may register to vote or pick up information.

Also on July 15 we will Share the Plate with the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida. The nonprofit, nonpartisan ACLU of Florida works to keep the spirit of the Bill of Rights alive. They protect those individual rights most people take for granted. All non-designated offerings on July 15 will go to ACLU of Florida.

Sunday-Sunday, July 22-29
UUFG hosts Family Promise guests beginning Sunday evening, July 22 and ending after breakfast on Sunday July 29. Please watch for announcements to sign up for your opportunity to help these homeless families get back on their feet. Volunteers will be needed to set up the rooms, provide and/or host meals, host overnight, and more.

Thursdays beginning August 16
“Voices of Immigrants in the 21st Century” book club will be presented by Welcoming Gainesville and Alachua County (of which UUFG is a member), in collaboration with Alachua County Library District at 7 pm on Thursday August 16 at Millhopper Branch Library. Don Smith will moderate. The book club will continue on the 3rd Thursday of each month (except December) through May 2019. Everyone is welcome.

Friday, August 17 — 19 and 24
“No Roosters in the Desert,” a play about undocumented immigrants by immigration attorney Kara Hartzler based on oral history interviews. This play is presented by Welcoming Gainesville and Alachua County (of which UUFG is a member), and will have its Florida premiere August 17 at The Hippodrome State Theatre with additional performances on August 18, 19, and 24. Ann Kinnebrew is director-producer.

Saturday, August 18
QueerBall Variety Show by Pride Community Center of North Central Florida, Saturday August 18 at 8 pm. This fundraiser for the Pride Center is co-sponsored by UUFG Social Justice Council and is held in our Sanctuary. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door and include complimentary snacks.

Sunday, August 19
Share the Plate with Food4Kids Backpack Program of North Florida at the service on August 19. One in four children in North Florida live in food-unstable homes, where they do not have reliable access to food, especially on the weekends.  The Food4Kids Backpack Program provides these children with basic nutrition by sending home non-perishable foods each weekend and during school vacations. All non-designated offerings at the August 19 service will be given to Food4Kids Backpack Program of North Florida.

Saturday, August 25
Susan B. Anthony lunch put on annually by Friends of Susan B. Anthony (and co-sponsored by UUFG Social Justice Council) will take place Saturday, August 25 beginning at 11:30am at the Wyndham Garden Conference Center, and the speaker will be Dr. Lynn Leverty.  Tickets will be available starting mid-July. This year the honoree will be our own UUFG member Dr. Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons!
